Discover the capital city of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo! The oldest city in the Americas dating back to the 15th century when it was founded by explorer Christopher Columbus, Santo Domingo is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wander down Calle de las Damas and admire the area’s majestic churches and colonial architecture. Make sure to visit historic sites like Alcázar de Colón, the former home of Christopher Columbus’ family; Las Casas Reales, the city’s old Parliament building; and Ozama Fortress which was built in 1502! The city is also home to charming boutiques and bustling markets where you can pick up handmade souvenirs. In the evening, you can experience the city’s vibrant nightlife at the local discos or test your luck at the casino. For more adventure, explore the area’s surrounding lush landscapes on a caving excursion to Los Tres Ojos National Park and discover the deep blue at La Caleta Underwater National Park.

National language: Spanish

Currency: DOP (Dominican Peso). We recommend travellers bring USD (United States Dollar) for their vacation.

Language notes: Hola! While the local language is Spanish, English is widely spoken in resorts and tourist areas.

Voltage: 110V

Travel tips: Canadian devices use 120 V and will work with 110 V. Many resorts have 120 V plugs. For older devices, items using motors or heating (heated beauty tools, electric toothbrushes) and three-prong plugs we recommend bringing an adaptor with voltage conversion.
